UL1007 vs UL1015 vs UL1028 vs UL1032: PVC Hook-Up Wire Guide

Choosing between UL1007, UL1015, UL1028 and UL1032 usually comes down to four variables: voltage rating, temperature rating, conductor size and the exact construction listed by the manufacturer. All four are UL 758 AWM hook-up wire styles, but they are not interchangeable across every application.

This guide compares the published data and explains how to narrow the choice before requesting a quotation. For a shorter comparison of the two most common styles, see the existing UL1007 vs UL1015 hook-up wire guide.

UL1007, UL1015, UL1028 and UL1032 at a glance

Style Voltage Temperature Insulation Published AWG range Typical selection driver
UL1007 300 V 80 °C PVC 32-16 AWG General internal wiring where a lower temperature rating is sufficient.
UL1015 600 V 105 °C PVC 30-2 AWG Higher voltage and higher temperature, including larger power conductors.
UL1028 600 V 105 °C PVC 22-6 AWG Applications that need a specific documented construction within the listed range.
UL1032 1000 V 90 °C PVC 30-10 AWG Higher voltage internal wiring where the temperature requirement stays within 90 °C.

Voltage and temperature are not the only variables. Insulation wall, overall diameter, conductor construction and resistance also change by AWG. Open each product page and compare the full construction table before selecting a style.

UL1007: 300 V, 80 °C PVC hook-up wire

UL1007 is a common choice for internal appliance, control-panel and electronic-equipment wiring. The published construction table lists 32-16 AWG, with solid and stranded conductors, insulation walls around 0.39-0.46 mm and a 2000 VAC routine withstand test on every listed row.

Choose UL1007 when the working voltage stays within 300 V and the maximum conductor temperature stays within 80 °C. If either limit is exceeded, move to a higher-rated style rather than relying on the insulation thickness alone.

UL1015: 600 V, 105 °C PVC hook-up wire

UL1015 extends the range to 600 V and 105 °C and is available from 30 AWG up to 2 AWG in the published table. The larger sizes make it suitable for power and control wiring where a PVC hook-up wire is acceptable.

Because the AWG range is broad, two UL1015 constructions can be very different in diameter, flexibility and resistance. Compare the conductor construction and maximum resistance for the exact size you need.

UL1028: 600 V, 105 °C with a different documented construction

UL1028 shares the 600 V and 105 °C ratings with UL1015, but the published table covers 22-6 AWG and should be checked against the specific drawing or construction requirement. Do not treat UL1015 and UL1028 as direct substitutes without confirming the conductor construction, diameter and approval scope.

UL1032: 1000 V, 90 °C PVC hook-up wire

UL1032 is the higher-voltage option in this group. The published table lists 30-10 AWG and insulation walls around 0.80 mm in the listed rows. It is useful for internal wiring where the voltage requirement is higher but the temperature requirement remains within 90 °C.

When both voltage and temperature are high, compare UL1032 with an XLPE or fluoropolymer construction. Review the XLPE and high-temperature hook-up wire family and the fluoropolymer wire family before deciding.

How to choose the right style

  • Start with the working voltage and the required temperature rating.
  • Confirm the required AWG, conductor construction and maximum resistance.
  • Check insulation wall and overall diameter against the connector, terminal and routing space.
  • Review flexibility, abrasion, oil, chemical and moisture exposure.
  • Confirm the applicable UL file scope and the exact construction on the product page.
  • Send the BOM or drawing when the cable forms part of a finished assembly.

All four styles are part of the UL PVC and SR-PVC hook-up wire family. The family page links the available styles and the related construction tables.

Documentation and approval scope

The manufacturer catalogue cites UL File No. E170689 for the listed UL 758 AWM styles. Certification files are held by the manufacturer. Before relying on a style for a finished-product approval, request the issued document and confirm that the exact style and construction are within its scope. See the certification and approvals page for the available records.

FAQ

Is UL1015 always a replacement for UL1007?

No. UL1015 has higher voltage and temperature ratings, but diameter, flexibility, conductor construction and approval scope can differ. Confirm the full construction and the end-product requirements.

Can UL1032 replace UL1015?

Only after checking both voltage and temperature. UL1032 offers a higher voltage rating in the published data, but its temperature rating is lower than UL1015 and the AWG ranges differ.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the style, AWG, conductor construction, colour, length and destination. If the wire is part of an assembly, include the BOM or drawing through the request a quote form.

Compare the full catalogue: visit the UL AWM wire catalogue or request the construction data for your exact style.

UL3266 vs UL3173 vs UL3398: XLPE Hook-Up Wire Guide

XLPE hook-up wire is selected when PVC does not provide enough heat resistance, dielectric performance or long-term stability. UL3266, UL3173 and UL3398 are three documented AWM styles in the Xinya range, but they differ in insulation material, AWG coverage and overall diameter.

This guide explains what to compare before choosing an XLPE or halogen-free high-temperature hook-up wire. If you are still comparing PVC and XLPE, start with the UL1007 vs UL1015 guide and then review the UL XLPE and high-temperature hook-up wire family.

UL3266, UL3173 and UL3398 at a glance

Style Insulation Published AWG range Published overall diameter Key selection point
UL3266 XLPE 10-32 AWG 1.0-4.3 mm Broad AWG coverage with solid and stranded constructions.
UL3173 XLPE 10-26 AWG 2.0-5.05 mm Larger-diameter XLPE construction for applications that can accept it.
UL3398 Halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin (XLPO) 10-30 AWG 1.05-4.3 mm Halogen-free construction in a compact diameter range.

The table above reflects the published catalogue data. Always confirm the exact style, voltage rating, temperature rating and approval scope for the construction being quoted.

What XLPE and XLPO mean

XLPE stands for cross-linked polyethylene. The cross-linked structure improves heat resistance and dielectric performance compared with standard thermoplastic PVC. XLPO refers to cross-linked polyolefin, a related family of materials that can provide a halogen-free construction.

Halogen-free is a material statement, not a complete fire-performance claim. If the project requires low smoke, flame spread or toxicity performance, confirm the exact test standard and document for the finished cable or assembly.

UL3266: broad AWG coverage

UL3266 is listed from 10-32 AWG with an overall diameter range of 1.0-4.3 mm. The catalogue states both solid and stranded constructions. The broad range makes UL3266 suitable when a project needs multiple conductor sizes from one XLPE style family.

Review the construction table for conductor diameter, insulation wall, overall diameter and maximum resistance. Do not select only by AWG because different conductor constructions can have different diameters and resistance values.

UL3173: larger XLPE construction

UL3173 is published from 10-26 AWG with an overall diameter of 2.0-5.05 mm. The construction table lists seven solid and fifteen stranded rows. Insulation wall is approximately 0.8-0.83 mm, and the maximum conductor resistance range is 3.54-150 Ω/km at 20 °C DC in the published rows.

The larger overall diameter can be an advantage when mechanical durability and insulation wall are important, but it must fit the connector, terminal, grommet and routing space. Compare it with other XLPE options before selecting the largest construction.

UL3398: halogen-free XLPO construction

UL3398 uses halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin insulation and is published from 10-30 AWG with an overall diameter of 1.05-4.3 mm. The catalogue lists eleven colours and both solid and stranded conductors.

UL3398 is a logical candidate when a project requires a halogen-free material and the published voltage, temperature and approval scope match the application. Confirm the exact standard, temperature rating and end-product requirements before placing the order.

How to select an XLPE hook-up wire

  • Confirm the working voltage and maximum conductor temperature for the exact style.
  • Check AWG, conductor construction and maximum resistance.
  • Compare insulation wall and overall diameter against the assembly design.
  • Confirm whether the application requires a halogen-free material.
  • Review flexibility, abrasion, oil, chemical and moisture exposure.
  • Check the UL file scope, product marking and available documentation.

Application examples for XLPE and XLPO hook-up wire

XLPE and halogen-free cross-linked constructions are commonly considered for control panels, power supplies, industrial equipment, appliances, lighting, instrumentation and internal harnesses where the conductor temperature or dielectric requirement exceeds a standard PVC rating.

The exact application still determines the approval path. If the wire is part of a recognized component, a UL-listed assembly, a CE-marked product or a customer-specific harness, confirm the end-product standard before selecting the style.

Insulation, diameter and routing checks

An XLPE construction with a larger insulation wall may provide more dielectric separation, but it also increases the overall diameter and may reduce flexibility. Compare the final diameter with the terminal, heat-shrink, grommet, cable gland and routing path.

For tight equipment layouts, compare UL3398 and UL3266 against UL3173. For larger power conductors, confirm the bend radius and support requirements rather than selecting only by AWG. Mechanical performance and temperature rating must both fit the application.

Certification and documentation

The manufacturer catalogue cites UL File No. E170689 for the listed UL 758 AWM styles. Certification documents are held by the manufacturer. Request the issued document and confirm that the exact style is within its scope. See the compliance page for the available records.

FAQ

Is XLPE always better than PVC?

Not always. XLPE is selected for higher heat resistance, dielectric performance or material requirements. PVC may be sufficient, easier to process or more cost-effective when the application stays within its ratings.

Is UL3398 the same as XLPE?

UL3398 uses a halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin construction. It is related to cross-linked materials but should be specified by its exact style and material when a halogen-free requirement applies.

Can I use the same AWG across UL3266, UL3173 and UL3398?

The same AWG may be available in more than one style, but diameter, insulation wall, conductor construction and resistance can differ. Compare the construction table and confirm the final assembly requirements.

Need a construction comparison? Send the style, AWG, colour, length and application through the request a quote form or review the full wire catalogue.

FEP vs ETFE vs PTFE Wire: UL1332, UL1330 and UL10086

FEP, ETFE and PTFE are fluoropolymer materials used when PVC or XLPE cannot meet the temperature, chemical or space requirements of an application. They are not interchangeable simply because all three are described as fluoropolymer wire.

This guide compares published Xinya styles and explains the practical selection factors. For the complete range, see the UL Teflon and fluoropolymer wire family.

FEP, ETFE and PTFE wire comparison

Style Material Voltage Temperature Published AWG range Published construction data
UL1332 FEP 300 V 200 °C 30-12 AWG Insulation wall approximately 0.33 mm; O.D. 0.96-3.04 mm in the published table.
UL1330 FEP 600 V 200 °C 30-12 AWG Insulation wall approximately 0.51 mm; O.D. 1.32-3.40 mm in the published table.
UL10086 ETFE 600 V 150 °C 32-20 AWG Insulation wall approximately 0.26 mm; O.D. 0.72-1.50 mm in the published table.
UL1637 PTFE Confirm exact construction Confirm exact construction Confirm exact construction PTFE-insulated shielded low-voltage construction; request the issued datasheet.

The article separates the known ratings from items that still need confirmation. A PTFE construction can be suitable for very high service temperatures and aggressive chemical exposure, but the applicable voltage, temperature and approval data should always come from the exact product document.

FEP wire: UL1332 and UL1330

FEP is a melt-processable fluoropolymer used for high-temperature hook-up wire. UL1332 provides a 300 V, 200 °C FEP construction from 30-12 AWG. UL1330 provides a 600 V, 200 °C FEP construction over the same AWG range with a thicker insulation wall.

Choose between them by voltage first. UL1332 has a smaller insulation wall in the published table, while UL1330 provides a higher voltage rating for the same temperature class. Confirm the final connector, stripping process and bend radius before selecting the smaller construction.

ETFE wire: UL10086

ETFE is a fluoropolymer with useful mechanical toughness and chemical resistance. UL10086 is published as a 600 V, 150 °C ETFE-insulated style from 32-20 AWG. The insulation wall is approximately 0.26 mm and the overall diameter range is 0.72-1.50 mm in the catalogue data.

UL10086 can be a good fit when a compact 600 V fluoropolymer wire is required and 150 °C is acceptable. It should not be selected only because its diameter is small; check temperature, chemical exposure and the end-product approval requirements.

PTFE wire and high-temperature applications

PTFE is widely recognised for high service temperature and chemical resistance. Xinya lists the PTFE-insulated shielded low-voltage wire UL1637. Because the catalogue data for this construction does not publish the same voltage and temperature summary as UL1330 and UL1332, request the exact datasheet before specifying it for a controlled application.

How to choose a fluoropolymer wire

  • Confirm the maximum conductor temperature, not only the ambient temperature.
  • Start with the required voltage rating and then compare insulation wall and diameter.
  • Review chemical exposure, moisture, abrasion and flexing requirements.
  • Check whether the cable will be stripped, crimped, soldered or potted.
  • Confirm the UL style, file scope and available issued documentation.
  • Match the colour, length and packaging to the production process.

When to move from XLPE to fluoropolymer

XLPE and halogen-free cross-linked polyolefin constructions are often suitable for elevated-temperature industrial wiring. A fluoropolymer should be considered when the required service temperature, chemical exposure or dielectric requirement exceeds what the XLPE construction can document.

Do not change material only because a fluoropolymer has a higher headline temperature. A thinner wall, smaller conductor or different stranding can change current capacity, mechanical durability and termination performance. Compare the complete construction and confirm the end-product test requirements.

Processing and stripping considerations

Fluoropolymer insulation has different mechanical behaviour from PVC. Stripping, cutting, crimping and soldering processes should be qualified on the exact construction. Confirm the conductor type, insulation wall and finished diameter with the harness or assembly supplier before production.

If the wire will be subjected to repeated flexing, tight bend radii or high-vibration service, request the bend and flex information available for the construction. A material with higher temperature resistance is not automatically suitable for a continuously flexing application.

Certification and documentation

The listed UL 758 AWM styles cite UL File No. E170689 in the manufacturer catalogue. For finished-product approvals, request the issued certificate or datasheet and confirm the exact style and construction. See the certification page for available records.

FAQ

Is FEP better than ETFE?

Neither material is universally better. FEP is used in UL1332 and UL1330 at a 200 °C rating, while ETFE is used in UL10086 at 150 °C with a compact construction. The required voltage, temperature and mechanical environment determine the choice.

Can PTFE replace FEP wire?

Only after confirming the exact voltage, temperature, diameter, mechanical requirements and approval scope. Similar material names do not make two constructions interchangeable.

What should I send for a quotation?

Send the style, AWG, colour, length, temperature, voltage and application. If the wire is used in an assembly, include the drawing or BOM through the request a quote form.

UL1007 vs UL1015: How to Choose 300 V and 600 V Hook-Up Wire

UL1007 and UL1015 are two of the most common UL 758 AWM hook-up wire styles used in control panels, appliances, electronics and industrial equipment. They look similar, but their voltage and temperature ratings lead to different selection decisions.

Quick comparison

Item UL1007 UL1015
Voltage rating 300 V 600 V
Temperature rating 80 °C 105 °C
Insulation PVC PVC
Typical AWG range 16–28 AWG 8–26 AWG
Common applications Electronic and control wiring Power, appliance and industrial wiring

When UL1007 is the better fit

Choose UL1007 when the circuit operates at 300 V or below and the expected conductor temperature stays within the 80 °C rating. Because UL1007 is often used in smaller electronics and control wiring, it is commonly specified in 16–28 AWG. Confirm the exact stranding, colour and cut length required for your assembly.

View the documented UL1007 300 V 80 °C PVC hook-up wire construction table.

When UL1015 is the better fit

Choose UL1015 when the working voltage is higher, the cable needs a 600 V rating, or the application requires a 105 °C temperature rating. UL1015 is also available in larger conductor sizes, which makes it suitable for power and industrial equipment wiring where a thicker conductor is required.

Review the UL1015 600 V 105 °C PVC hook-up wire specification and AWG range.

Do not select by title alone

A product title or style number is not enough for a final design decision. Check the following details against the drawing or BOM:

  • Voltage rating under the applicable standard and test condition.
  • Continuous conductor temperature and nearby heat sources.
  • AWG or mm², conductor material and stranding.
  • Insulation material and wall thickness.
  • Colour, marking, cut length, reel or spool format.
  • UL file scope and the finished-product approval route.

Certification scope

UL 758 AWM is a component-recognition programme. A recognized AWM style is intended for use inside a listed or recognized end product, not as a stand-alone finished-product listing. Xinya UL 758 AWM recognition is documented under UL File No. E170689; confirm that the exact style appears in the Table of Recognized Styles. See the compliance and certificate downloads for the available file records.

FAQ

Can UL1007 be used at 600 V?

Do not assume so. The UL1007 construction is published as a 300 V style. Use a style with the correct documented voltage rating for the application.

Is UL1015 always larger than UL1007?

No. Their available AWG ranges overlap, but UL1015 offers larger conductor sizes and a higher voltage and temperature rating.

Which one is better for a 105 °C application?

UL1015 has a 105 °C rating. Confirm the exact construction, marking and end-product requirements before ordering.

Send your required style, AWG, colour and length through the quotation form.
